Here is How You Can Know Your Skin Type

Building a skincare routine requires a lot of hard work and attention to detail. Everyone goes by the rule of cleansing, exfoliating, moisturizing, and sunblock, but knowing which products to buy can get a little tricky. How do you know what would suit your skin? Every time you buy a product, does it feel like it is making your skin more oily/dry? So, where could you be going wrong?

The first step to building a skincare routine is knowing what your skin needs. Before putting in any products and hoping for them to work, it is important to know how your skin works and what it needs to look better and fresh. This is why knowing your skin type is always the first step to building a successful skincare routine.

Different Skin Types

If you are new to the skincare world, it will take some time to familiarize yourself with your skin. There are four basic skin types. Read on to know some of their characteristics.

Normal skin: the skin type everyone wishes for. Normal skin is balanced, and it has a smooth texture with small pores and doesn’t feel too oily or dry.

Oily skin: oily skin is determined by the greasy and shiny surface, which is because of the excess amount of sebum production. People with oily skin usually have enlarged pores and are prone to acne.

Dry skin: dry skin can be rough, flaky, and tight. It feels rough and tight and is more prone to showing lines because of the lack of hydration.

Combination skin: this skin type is a combination of dry and oily skin. People with combination skin have oily t-zones and dry or normal cheeks.

How to Determine Your Skin Type?

Everyone has unique and different skin, but everyone’s skin can share some common characteristics that can place it in one of the skin types. The two easy ways you can determine your skin type at home are:

A girl touching her face and looking in the mirror.

The Bare-Faced Method

Gently dry your skin after cleansing it with a mild cleanser. Leave it bare and check how it looks after 30 minutes. If your skin feels dry and tight, you have dry skin. If your skin looks oily in some areas and is shiny, you have oily skin. If only your nose, forehead, and cheeks look oily, you have combination skin.

The Blotting Sheet Method

You can use a blotting sheet to determine the kind of skin you have, as blotting paper absorbs oil. Press a blotting paper on different areas of your skin and look at it in the light. If the blotting paper picks up no oil, you have dry skin. If the blotting paper picks up oil from the T-zone, you have combination skin. And, if the blotting paper picks up oil from all over your face – you have oily skin.

Regardless of the type of skin you have, it is important to take care of it. Getting regular skin treatments can help keep the problems at bay and give you glowing skin.
